LéaLA at Fiesta Broadway 2015

Did you catch our LéaLA team at this years Fiesta Broadway? We had fun at the event, especially, talking with the many fiesta goers.

The largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the world hosted about 300,000 of mostly Latinos. We were proud to had been part of it, and helping spread the word about the next biggest event coming up next month in Los Angeles, LéaLA 2015 - Held at Los Angeles Convention Center.

LéaLA will also be hosting a few special live shows; "El Último Preso" "Bestiario" and "Cuentos para no dormir"

We are looking forward to seeing you next month at LéaLA  2015.

With the objective of expanding its programs by focusing on the diffusion of the culture and the arts of the Latino community in the City of Los Angeles, California, the University of Guadalajara has created one of the biggest and most ambitious projects around the promotion of the Spanish-language: LéaLA, the Los Angeles Spanish-language Book Fair.

The purpose of this event is to encourage reading and to promote books in Spanish, as well as the recognition of the Latino population, their culture and traditions. LéaLA is an initiative sponsored by the University of Guadalajara at Los Angeles and by the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL).

A 55 años de la publicación del Bestiario de Juan José Arreola, el compositor Alonso Arreola presenta una lectura ilustrada y musicalizada en torno a una selección de textos sobre animales extraídos del libro de su abuelo.

Ilustrados en vivo por  la cantante Iraida Noriega,  el cineasta de tinta y arena Arturo López “Pio”  y el músico y escritor José Maria Arreola  crean estampas cuya ligereza y sentido del humor contrasta con un segundo homenaje, éste al poeta José Emilio Pacheco encarnado por el también músico y escritor Fernando Rivera Calderón.

Así, la luz, la música y el video oscilan entre la poesía y la fuerza, el prodigio y la bestialidad.

After 55 years of the publication of “Bestiario” by Juan Jose Arreola, the music composer Alonso Arreola presents an illustrated and musicalized piece of reading as a result of selected texts about animals, extracted from his grandfather book.

Illustrated by the singer Iraida Noriega, the film maker of “ink and sand” Arturo Lopez “Pio” and the musician and writer Jose Maria Arreola, Scenes are created with great humor which contrast with a second tribute to the poet Jose Emilio Pacheco played by the musician and writer Fernando Rivera Calderon.

Light, music and video oscillate from poetry and strength, prodigy and bestiality.

Jazz Palabra Performing Live at Los Angeles Theater Center - May 15th

Jazz Palabra es una obra interdisciplinaria inventada en 1963 por Juan José Gurrola, artista vanguardista efigie de la cultura en México. Considerada por los historiadores de arte como “uno de los primeros performances que se registraron en México”  a inicios de los años 60.

Jazz Palabra es una obra escénica que conjuga el género musical con una coreografía vanguardista y lectura de textos escritos por Octavio Paz, E.E. Cummings, Jack Kerouac y Homero Aridjis.

En este acercamiento, a partir del rescate sonoro y cinematográfico del archivo de Gurrola, pretendemos volver a probar este experimento in situ. Un pedacito de los 60s. Más que una reconstrucción arqueológica, un archivo en escena.

In the weekend of May 15-17th during LeaLA, we also have other cultural programs such as, "El Ultimo Preso."

This one time show will be playing at the Montalban Theater, May 16th.

THIRST OF POWER AND THE INTRANSIGENCE OF THE SYSTEM

The story takes place in a hypothetical country where the repressor system has been so brutal that no one is already willing to speak out against the government; to the point that the last political prisoner is willing to recant his subversive and revolutionary ideas to be released. This will bring endless tangles crazed where the police and the system question its rationale, for where there is no one to arrest, does it make sense to continue to exist? Police end probably arresting itself to justify their reason for being.

LA SED DEL PODER Y LAS INTRANSIGENCIAS DEL SISTEMA

La historia se desarrolla en un hipotético país en donde el sistema represor ha sido tan brutal que ya nadie está dispuesto a alzar su voz en contra del gobierno; tanto así que el último preso político que queda está dispuesto a retractarse de sus ideas subversivas y revolucionarias con el fin de ser puesto en libertad. Esto acarreará un sinfín de enloquecidos enredos donde la policía y el sistema cuestionan su razón de ser, porque donde no queda nadie a quien aprehender, ¿tiene sentido seguir existiendo? Probablemente, la policía terminará arrestándose a sí misma para justificar su razón de ser.
